I NEED TO TALK to her.

I shouldn’t be acting like this. I just found her three days ago. I shouldn’t be pacing around my hotel room trying to find a way to run into her. I don’t know anything about her besides her name and where she lives, and I can’t just show up at her apartment. That’s too obvious.

Pulling the hotel door closed behind me, I walk to the end of the hall. I need out. I need to do something…anything. I can’t just stay in here, lost in my thoughts. I need to escape.

Running down the stairs, I quickly move through the lobby, avoiding eye contact with everyone and push my way outside. My anxiety lessens slightly when I breathe in the night’s air. My mind clears the further away I get from the hotel. I don’t do well in cramped spaces.

I pick up my phone and dial Ryanne’s number. I don’t know why I keep going to her, but I know that she’ll be able to help. “Hello?” she picks up on the first ring.

“That was fast,” I tell her. “It’s a Friday night, don’t you have a life now?” I try joking with her. Wherever she is, it’s oddly quiet.

Ryanne doesn’t answer right away. Muffled noises echo through her end as if she just started moving. “I don’t…I don’t get out much anymore,” she replies, her voice much softer than it just was.

“Oh,” I can’t think of a response to that. I’m not the only one struggling to move on from the events of that battle. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize.”

“It’s okay,” she says, her voice sounding more normal. “So, what’s new in the mysterious world of James?” she asks me. “Talk to your soulmate?”

“Not in three days. I haven’t even seen her since then.” I glance both ways, making sure the road is safe to pass, and make my way across. I have no idea where I’m going. I just need to do something more than sit and watch reruns.

“Why is that?” She asks.

“I don’t know.”

“Yes you do.” There’s that tiny inkling of premonition she might have. She’s always been a little more perceptive than most. “You just don’t want to put yourself through that.”

“Ryanne…” I start, but stop. Leaning against a random building, I try to sort through the jumbled mess in my mind.

“James, the Fates showed you your soulmate at this time for a reason. That anxiousness you’re feeling…” she says, “well, she’ll be feeling it too. Don’t put her through that. A wise woman once told me to accept what has happened and make the best of what could happen.”

“I just—” she interrupts me again.

“You feel like you don’t deserve happiness,” she whispers, stating my sentiments exactly. “Well, big guy, let me tell you something. You do deserve happiness, and you’re the only person standing in your way.” When I don’t say anything, she speaks again. “You know what you have to do.”

“I can’t do that.”

My eyes follow a couple walking hand in hand across the street.
